Select your text and then go TextFX -> TextFX Tools -> Word Count
(don’t see the TextFX menu? scroll down!)

If you don’t see the TextFX menu you might need to install the plug-in. In my experience it seems like sometimes Notepad++ comes with this installed and other times it doesn’t.
- Go to
Plugins > Plugin Manager > Show Plugin Manager

- Select
TextFX Charactersand then clickInstall.

cool! saves me X minutes to look over all those menu’s!
Thanks for spending that saved time on posting a comment
.
I have installed TextFX and it provides a lot of functionality. Thanks for this.
Dude, this should be simple…I couldn’t believe that even within Notepad ++, when you click “Get More Plugins” in the “?” (Help) menu it takes you to some stupid wiki that lists all Notepad ++ plugins and the term “Word Count” is nowhere on the page! Thanks for this easy explanation!
It’s simpler than you think. Since NP++ v5.8 there is a word count included in the Summary. You have two options to display this (maybe more, I don’t know):
1. From the menu bar, View > Summary…
2. Double click on the status bar at the bottom where it says “length : xxx lines : xxx”
The Summary window appears, with line, word and character counts. Quick, magic.
I found that the word count from summary is different from the TextFX plugin.
When I run wc -w thetextfile.txt it gives the same count like TextFX and that also goes from copying the same text into MS WORD, NP++ should check their code on how it count the words ’cause I think it wrong.
Yes I’m the man behind Windows 8 LOL
Almost forgot, Thank you for your nice tip.
I’m still the man behind Windows 8 LOL
Hi my family member! I wish to say that this article is awesome, nice written and come with approximately all vital infos. I would like to see extra posts like this .
Thanks a ton!!
Thank you so much Ryan. Your post saved me good amount of search time.
I didn’t know that the TextFX plugin has a word counter. Now I do not need any external word counter….
This page came up first on google for me and gave me all I wanted. The comments were as helpful as the main article so thanks for creating the page and thanks to the non-ludicrous commenters!
I also cannot help but wonder if that guy above (The Man Behind Windows 8) is just indicating his choice of OS to us or is he willing to take blame or credit for it?
Thank you for posting this.
Have you any tool to make a list of words and the number of times it appears in the text?
Sincerely
